I like my memory like I like my coffee.. fast and cheap
I've talked about mozy in my blog before but focused on the consumer benefit, rather than the commercial use. I came across an article today about how companies are using online servers as opposed to conventional hardware. It makes sense I guess, one of the most costly parts of the computer is the hard drive/server, why not just get it from somewhere else? The article says that the memory is cheap, "Amazon charges 15 cents for a gigabyte of storage and 10 cents an hour for a server, services that customers say are up to 90% cheaper than rental alternatives from computer-hosting companies like Equinix and Rackspace". I bet a lot of companies use these services, being so cheap and all. I tend not to think too much about what or how big companies run their systems, perhaps I should pay more attention. This stuff it really interesting, it's like there's this whole underground of activity happening right under our noses.

I feel the same way, Steph. Im taking this strategy MIS component right now, and it seems like every class, my prof reveals some emerging technology. It upsets me that I hadnt already read about these things.
Online servers, eh? Seems really risky, but I have heard of renting servers hosted by companies designated for that. I almost think I would rather own the hardware; that way the system is under my control, ya know?
Yeah, I know what you mean to have it in your control.. Though the article talked about a specific instance where the company needed to do a lot of computing for this one problem (it was something like sorting information about homes like in real-estate) so that makes sense. It seems silly to buy a bunch (or rent I guess) of hardware if you're only going to use it once, especially if you can do it cheaper and faster through one of these online servers!
