the back-up round-up

While reading an article about Leopard I got caught up in the idea of the new Time Machine feature on the new OS. I thought man, what a great idea. If there's one thing people don't do it's backup their files. While I don't have anything terribly important, I do have thousands of music files that I would have a hard time parting with. I have my sexy little 40gig external hard drive that goes pretty much everywhere with me. It mainly contains music and video files that I don't have room on my laptop for. I really should work harder at backing up my files. On spring break last year with the lacrosse team I was in Colorado and a piece in my external broke off. I had to do without some of my jams for a few weeks until I could get the necessary parts to fix it- I didn't know what to do with myself.

A really cool service that I don't think too many people know about is the lala.com music storage and store. You can upload all your music on this site and listen to it anywhere. Also it has a really cool music store that competes with the itunes store.
Anything you buy from us is ready for your iPod. Whether you choose to buy physical CDs or digital albums, your purchase is about owning the music you love bundled with the convenience of having it accessible online.

What an innovative idea. Lala is an awesome service not to mention a convenient backup system for all your precious music files. Anyone with an extensive digital music collection should definitely look into this service. You can also sync with your ipod (and I would guess your friends ipods) with the site. This is a really awesome idea, the music is as crisp and clear as it would be on your own computer- give it a try!

On the businessweek article there was a comment about the Mozy online backup system which I think I will invest in. Once I get back in the states I will pay the $4.95 a month to have my HDD backed up online. I've been hesitant thus far to put all my files up on the internet but what the heck. I still think I will also invest in a bigger external that I can just throw in my closet and forget about, only backing up my files every once in a while. The thing with having to manually update files on an external hard drive is that, like the article says, I would have to keep connected to the external all the time. I move around a lot bringing my computer to class or studying in a library etc. it wouldn't be likely that I would want to lug around an external with me all the time. Though my little 40gigger isn't really a problem. It's no bigger than a TV remote and has a nice little leather case.

What would be cool would be if I could finally set up my room to be wireless. Last year I wanted to set up the printer in my room so my roommate and I could print wirelessly off the same printer. Having my external and printer set up wirelessly to my computer would be pretty hot. I also want to look into using a nice TV as my monitor.. seeing as how I'll already be using my TV as a TiVo as previously mentioned. Dream it you dreamers.. I need some money first. The thing with being a tech-nerd is that all our toys are so damn expensive! If you would like to fund my projects please send a check to...... alright, just kidding. Keep dreaming.
