Let's all copy the iphone!

Do me a favor.. look away from the screen and then look quickly at the three phones pictured and then look away. I know, you're confused... Why would Shilton post a photo of three models of the same phone? Well let's be honest, we know they're not all the SAME phone, but they're damn near close. This can't be the only interface that a smart phone can have. This is getting out of hand people!!! While browsing the news I came across an article about Sony Ericsson's new phone- the Xperia X1 aka a knock off of the iphone. Apple is not as good as everyone makes it out to be, stop feeding into it! Apple is like the captain of the high school football team. He walks around being a jerk to everyone but we all still adore him. Someone PLEASE stand up to this company!

For real. It's okay though...the market always needs one leader to push strategy that works, and then others follow. A little rat race we all play.

Speaking of following the leader, did you read the businessweek article that talked about if MS breaks into another company that sells the zune and the hardware that has not been marketed well, along with the idea and merging of Yahoo!, there might actually be a successful future ahead? Dont have the link...but am searching for it.

I suppose you're right, Linds. I just don't understand why someone doesn't try someting new... the iphone can't be our ONLY option!

And no, I haven't read the businessweek article, send it to me!!

I'll send you the article once I find it...

I was thinking about this issue again yesterday when one of those kick-ass commercials came on tv for iphone...I hate them. I was thinking that, if the style is being copied so much and so closely, will these other phone companies start to become the off-brand?

What would differentiate Apple (THE brand, per se) from Sony for a customer who is purchasing a product like this solely for the look and feel? It's like the iPod and the Zune or Dell mp3 player. We all know iPod is what people think f when they buy an mp3 player. For an un-learned consumer, the Zune and Dell mp3 (dont know what it's called, and dont really care) may appear as the off-brand.

I think to battle this problem, companies are going to have to really market on the differences that make it that much more important of an alternative to the iPhone. The differences of Sony is that it runs on a Windows platform, it has the combination of a touch screen and a QWERTY keyboard, and is completely 3G enabled. It looks a little more jumbled than the iPhone, but has a bit more of a practical use to it.

The thing I hate about Apple is its proprietary nature. It has always been running in its own world, while the rest of the PC and mobile PC industry work together to build products. Apple is succeeding right now, but I tend to prefer a product more realistic in nature. The only thing "cool" about the iPhone is the touch screen and the integration of music. Why is a touch screen so cool, anyway? Ive been using those things since I was like 11 years old waiting in a mcDonalds line and playing with one of those new touch screen operators. Also, I think its about time the rest of the market sees how average their products are, anyway. I guess Im all about functionality, and those products are too aesthetic for me. Just the way I see it, I guess.

I totally agree Lindsay, the iphone isn't as practical as it is cool. But let's look at the demographic for the phone- people our age. Unfortunately, we're a generation of "cool" and thus the iphone prevails. The iphone fits a niche that other phones are trying to replicate, a phone that does sophisticated things in a fun way. Maybe the google phone (if they ever get around to actually making it) will fit a both fun AND practical demographic (you and me) haha
