"You are smarter than your computer"

Today in my sociology class we were learning a program to analyze our sociological data. In class my professor actually said "You are smarter than your computer". This practically made my blood turn cold, it pretty much goes against everything I've ever been taught etc. etc. A similar situation would be for a lunatic to go into an Evangelical mass and yell "THERE IS NO GOD! JESUS IS A HOAX!" .. alright that might be a bit of an exaggeration but still, there is no human that is truly smarter than a computer. I guess it depends on your definition.

First of all- computers are never wrong. What I would have loved to yell out was "actually.. you are NOT smarter than your computer, but perhaps the person who designed and/or programmed this particular program did so in a way that didn't really make sense". That would have been better for me. I really hope that this class of 20-some odd people don't walk out of this classroom thinking that they're smarter than a computer.

We've been talking about this phenomenon a lot recently in HCI, about how people don't trust computers. In a lot of the plane accidents and such if people weren't involved the accidents may not have happened. Argh, how frustrating..
